Big Basin State Park is a famous place, many people started hiking from its headquarter to Berry Creek Falls in Boulder Creek.   In fact, it’s more attractive to start from Waddell Beach in Davenport. We hiked from Waddell Beach to Berry Creek Falls on September 17, 2016.

Waddell Beach
3600 Highway 1, Davenport, CA 95017

As shown below, there is a parking lot for around 30 cars or more.

We arrived there at 10:00 in the morning, some early birds were surfing there already.

The entrance of the trail is at the other side of the parking lot. There is a big sign for hiking instruction: 5.6 miles to Berry Creek Falls, 12.9 miles to Big Basin Headquarter,  29.5 miles to Saratoga Gap (the so-called Sea to Skyline trail).

Walk about half mile, there is the Nature and History Center.

At the other end of the Center, you will see the following sign, please go left for hikers (bypass trail) and straight for biking people.

The bypass trail is about 3 miles. It’s one hundred percent shaded from here to the Berry Creek Falls, good for hiking in Summer. We can see Rancho del Oso through the trees.

There is a bridge at the end of the bypass trail, follow the direction on the sign to go after the bridge (turn left).

You will see a camping ground here, permit required, and  camping people can drive here.

Some backpackers are on the way, we say Hi to each other and then go ahead with our own way.

No horse or bikes on the trail after this sign, and you have to cross the creek to the other side to the waterfalls.

We happened to see a bunch of butterflies on the way just before we reached the waterfall. Be careful, not to step on them.

Finally you will see this sign and then the Berry Creek Falls is in front of you!

Obviously, this is a popular place and an achievement for hikers. Most of the time we can see rainbows here.

The return trip is almost downhill, we see the Waddell Beach again on the Bypass trail.

It’s around 5:00 in the evening when we came back to the beach. Many people were doing kitesurfing here, colorful kites are so beautiful that we we felt refreshed right away!

In summary, it’s a 12 miles to and from trail between Waddell Beach and Berry Creek Falls. This trail is completely shaded, good for any season, the waterfall has more water in Spring and especially a cool trail for Summer.
